Toshiba Group positions fulfillment of CSR as a key management policy. Toshiba Group's CSR action policies emphasize four items in order to make CSR an integral part of every employee's activities every day.

The CSR Governance Committee held in March 2007 has formulated the mid-term CSR plan covering a 3-year period from fiscal 2008 to 2010. The plan sets quantitative targets for each fiscal year on themes such as compliance, environmental management, customer satisfaction, quality and safety of products, human rights, employee satisfaction, health and safety, corporate citizenship, and CSR procurement.
The Corporate Social Responsibility Division, which directly reports to the President, and its subordinate division, the CSR Implementation Office, are spearheading Toshiba's CSR activities in cooperation with the other divisions concerned. The CSR Governance Committee, consisting of the Corporate Senior Executive Vice President, who heads the CSR Division, and the executives concerned, is also attended by the President, and it is responsible for decision-making on Toshiba Group-wide CSR activity policies. Based on the policies determined, CSR-related committees, such as the Risk-Compliance Committee, the Corporate Environment Management Committee, and the Chief Quality Executive Committee established in 2007 (see the figure below), formulate and implement action plans for the themes corresponding to their responsibilities. In-house companies, business sites and group companies worldwide implement CSR-oriented management based on Toshiba Group's action policies under the leadership of their respective Chief CSR Officers
In fiscal 2006, Chief CSR Officers were appointed at in-house companies, operational sites, and group companies worldwide. They are responsible for formulating CSR promotion plans and monitoring progress.
In fiscal 2007, the CSR Implementation Office visited Chief CSR Officers at in-house companies and major group companies every 3 months to ensure thorough implementation of the Toshiba Group CSR Action Policies and to monitor the progress of priority themes.
In order to inculcate CSR throughout Toshiba Group, periodic assessment and audits of progress at companies of Toshiba Group are performed according to CSR activity themes.
For instance, the Legal Affairs Division, the Corporate Environment Management Division and the Information Security Center, assess and audit progress status of companies of Toshiba Group in terms of compliance, environmental management, information security, respectively. With regard to environmental management, separate from the ISO 14001 audits, internal environmental management audits using New EASTER (Environmental Audit System in Toshiba on the basis of ECO Responsibility) are performed. New EASTER emphasizes workplace management at factories and complements ISO 14001 audits that focus on management systems.
The divisions of Toshiba and group companies self-audit their information security management systems, including those for personal data. The Corporate Audit Division conducts periodic management audits, including compliance and other CSR-related items of in-house companies and group companies worldwide, and reports the audit results to the top management.

Toshiba Group has designated December as CSR Month since fiscal 2006. CSR Month is an opportunity for self-assessment of CSR activities. During the month, Toshiba Group holds the CSR Conference at which Group-wide companies present their activities, and outstanding achievements are honored. Furthermore, in-house companies, business sites, and group companies intensify CSR education and training during the month and hold corporate citizenship events to inculcate CSR. The Third CSR Conference held in December 2007 had around 600 participants, including Toshiba Group's senior executives and labor union representatives. Toshiba provides a wide range of education and training opportunities with the aim of inculcating CSR in workplaces throughout Toshiba Group. Education programs are designed, corresponding to needs of the respective positions, such as for general managers, newly assigned auditors for group companies, newly assigned managerial personnel, and new employees. In addition to the education on the Toshiba Group Standards of Conduct for all Toshiba Group employees, we provide year-round education programs addressing specific CSR themes, such as compliance with the Act against Delay in Payment of Subcontract Proceeds, Etc. to Subcontractors, environmental management, human rights, information security, safety, customer satisfaction, etc. Prompted by an incident involving flow-meter data falsification, in fiscal 2007, we provided education on engineer's ethics to engineers and technical staff at Group-wide companies with the aim of preventing recurrence of such incidents by raising engineers' awareness of ethics as well as compliance. Also, we provided education on the Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law to Group-wide employees in Japan in order to ensure product safety.
